Railway Workers Union suspends strike after NLC directive

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana has officially suspended its planned nationwide strike and peaceful picketing scheduled for September 30, 2025, following a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

In a letter addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, the union explained that the NLC had responded to its earlier notice and instructed that the industrial action be paused to make way for negotiations.

“The Commission has directed that we stay our intended action and appear for negotiations on 30th September 2025. We remain committed to this process and will honour the Commission’s directive in good faith,” the union stated.

Despite the suspension, the union made it clear that if their grievances are not resolved through the upcoming dialogue, they reserve the right to resume strike action at a later date.

The intended protest was in response to the government’s failure to pay 12 months of outstanding salaries and entitlements, which the union says have pushed workers into severe financial distress.

In its initial notice to the police, the union cited the non-payment of wages since October 2024, blaming the arrears for a rise in broken homes, health challenges, and interrupted education for their children.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has thrown its full support behind the Railway Workers Union, with TUC General Secretary, Joshua Ansah, earlier issuing an ultimatum to the government to clear the arrears by September 30 or risk a broader national strike.

The union now awaits the outcome of the scheduled negotiations on September 30, which it hopes will bring a lasting resolution to the ongoing salary crisis.
