The National Sports Authority (NSA) has officially lifted the suspension on professional boxing in Ghana, effective Thursday, November 6, 2025, marking a major turning point for one of the country’s most iconic sporting disciplines.

The decision follows months of consultations between the NSA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) tasked with overseeing boxing’s normalization process.

“This marks a major step toward restoring Ghana’s illustrious and proud boxing heritage,” the NSA stated.

Reform Pillars for Ghanaian Boxing

The IMC has made significant progress in addressing the issues that led to the suspension, introducing a suite of reforms focused on medical safety, professionalism, and global competitiveness:

  • Published Medical & Safety Manuals, Codes, and Regulations
  • Functional Interim Medical Commission
  • Centralized Medical Database
  • Approved Insurance Framework
  • Sustainable Medical Support System
  • Certified Ringside and Medical Staff

These frameworks aim to safeguard athletes, attract investment, and restore international confidence in Ghana’s boxing ecosystem.

The NSA has called on local and foreign promoters to bring international bouts and collaborations to Ghana, under the enhanced standards now in place.

In the coming weeks, the NSA and IMC will launch a nationwide education and stakeholder engagement campaign to introduce the new operational structures and promote boxer welfare initiatives.

Legacy and Future

Ghana, home to world champions like Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, and Joshua Clottey, is now poised to reclaim its place on the global boxing stage — under a regulated, safer, and sustainable system.
