Former Minister for Works and Housing and senior lawyer Samuel Atta Akyea has called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to exercise sound judgment as they prepare to elect the party’s next flagbearer.

Addressing party supporters at Mpraeso in the Eastern Region, Atta Akyea cautioned delegates against choosing a candidate whose conduct could tarnish Ghana’s international reputation. He warned that the country must not be represented by someone who may cause embarrassment on global platforms.

“Let’s not make a mistake and elect someone who will insult world leaders when he travels to the United Nations,” he said, stressing that decorum and diplomacy are essential at high-level gatherings such as the UN General Assembly.

The former minister said the party’s next leader must demonstrate maturity, statesmanship and the temperament required to engage constructively with the international community.

The NPP will elect its 2028 flagbearer on January 31. Of the five candidates in the race, the two leading contenders are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and former MP Kennedy Agyapong.

Although Atta Akyea did not mention any candidate by name, observers believe his remarks were directed at Mr. Agyapong.
