Kumasi to experience temporary power cuts as GRIDCo links New Anwomaso plant

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced planned works on the 330kV Takoradi–Thermal–Anwomaso Transmission Line to facilitate the connection of a new power generation plant at Anwomaso in Kumasi to the national grid.

The announcement follows a temporary power outage that affected parts of Greater Kumasi on Sunday, December 21, 2025, after a minor fault at GRIDCo resulted in a reduction in electricity supply to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). In a press statement issued the same day, GRIDCo explained that the ongoing works are being undertaken by AKSA Energy to enable its newly constructed Anwomaso power plant to begin operations.

According to GRIDCo, the plant, once fully commissioned, will increase Ghana’s power generation capacity and significantly improve the reliability of electricity supply to Kumasi and surrounding communities. As part of the commissioning process, an exercise is underway to safely connect the AKSA Anwomaso Generating Plant to the national power system through the 330kV transmission line.

GRIDCo noted that the activity may require a temporary interruption of power supply to some customers for about three hours to allow for the safe termination and integration of the new substation. Power supply to all affected areas is expected to be fully restored by 11:00 p.m. the same day.

The company apologised for any inconvenience the temporary disruption may cause and assured the public that the works are necessary to enhance the stability and reliability of electricity supply in Kumasi and adjoining areas.
