Rev. Lawrence Tetteh backs Andre Ayew’s Black Stars return for 2026 World Cup

Founder and President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, has called for the return of Andre Ayew to Ghana’s national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the experienced forward still has an important role to play for the Black Stars.
Ayew, 36, has not featured for Ghana since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where the Black Stars suffered a disappointing group-stage exit.
But debate over the former captain’s future has resurfaced in recent months following his move to Dutch side NAC Breda in January, despite the club suffering relegation from the Eredivisie at the end of the season.
Speaking on GTV on Thursday, Rev Dr Tetteh said Ayew’s leadership, experience and commitment could prove vital as Ghana prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
“We are privileged to have many football icons,” he said.
“Even before Abedi Pele, we had people who played very well for Ghana, the likes of Baba Yara, Polo and others.
“Today, I look at this moment, and I was even talking to a Sheikh that we should get Dede Ayew. I think I’m campaigning for him to join the Black Stars team.”
Tetteh praised Ayew’s fighting spirit and described him as a player who inspires those around him.
“The boy plays with his might. In fact, he carries his father’s spirit,” he added.
“Dede Ayew is a motivator. Remember, he led the Under-20s in Egypt in 2009 when they won. He is very experienced and, by the grace of God, he’s still doing very well. We should give him the chance.”
Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers and captained the national side for several years, earning praise for his influence both on and off the pitch.
However, opinions among supporters remain divided over whether the veteran forward should return as Ghana attempt to build a younger squad for the future.
Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to announce a provisional squad before confirming his final World Cup list by 1 June.
Ghana will be making their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026 and have been drawn in Group I alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June before facing England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
