Supreme Court dismisses suits challenging removal of former CJ Gertrude Torkornoo

The Supreme Court has unanimously dismissed four constitutional suits challenging the President’s discretionary authority and the processes used to suspend former Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, describing the actions as unmeritorious.
According to Murtala Inusah, Legal Affairs Correspondent with EIB Network, the seven-member panel, chaired by Justice Amadu Tanko, first dismissed the consolidated suits filed by Old Tafo MP Vincent Assafuah and Theodore Atta Quartey.
The Court subsequently dismissed the second action filed by Justice Torkornoo herself against the five-member committee that investigated the petitions leading to her removal. That case had been consolidated with a separate suit brought by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CENCEM LBG).
The apex court held that none of the suits raised issues warranting constitutional intervention and affirmed the legality of the processes undertaken.
The Court announced that its full written decisions in all four cases will be ready by 12:00 noon.
