Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo says the Black Stars will “be back stronger” after their World Cup campaign ended with a narrow defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.

Ghana were beaten 1-0 in Kansas City, bringing an end to a promising tournament in which they had progressed from Group L.

Semenyo played the full match as Ghana pushed for an equaliser late on, with Ernest Nuamah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku also involved in a sustained spell of pressure.

However, Colombia held firm to deny the Black Stars a place in the last 16.

In a message posted on Instagram after the game, Semenyo spoke of his disappointment but thanked supporters who travelled across the United States to back the team.

“Words can’t describe how I feel,” the Manchester City attacker said. “The team wanted more, and I wanted more.

“To all Ghanaians, thank you for your incredible support and for travelling across America to cheer us on.”

The 26-year-old said Ghana would use the setback as motivation ahead of future international fixtures.

“This isn’t a loss, it’s a lesson learned,” he added. “We’ll be back stronger. Believe that.”

Ghana’s exit means they must wait longer to match or better their best World Cup performance, when they reached the quarter-finals in 2010.
