New Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has set his sights on delivering success in Ghana and across Africa after outlining his ambition to build a team capable of challenging for major honours.

The South African is appointed head coach of the Ghana Premier League giants ahead of the 2026-27 season and says he is eager to lead one of the continent’s most successful clubs into a new era.

Speaking after his appointment, Tinkler said he was excited by the opportunity and determined to help the Porcupine Warriors compete at the highest level.

“I am honoured and excited to join one of Africa’s most storied football institutions. Asante Kotoko’s rich history, passion for success and ambition for development are well known across the continent.

“I look forward to working with the players, staff and management to build a team that can compete and win, both at home and on the continental stage.

“I feel proud to be associated with this great club at this historical moment.”

The 55-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Kumasi-based club after coaching some of South Africa’s biggest sides, including Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits.

His coaching achievements include guiding Orlando Pirates to the CAF Champions League final and leading SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. He has also lifted several domestic trophies, including the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout.

Before beginning his coaching career, Tinkler was one of South Africa’s most accomplished footballers. The former midfielder captained Bafana Bafana, won 48 international caps and featured at the 1998 FIFA World Cup after helping his country win the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations. He also played professionally in England and Italy with Barnsley and Cagliari.

Kotoko are expected to begin pre-season preparations in the coming days as Tinkler starts work on shaping his squad for the new campaign, with supporters hoping his experience can help return the club to the summit of Ghanaian football and make a significant impact in continental competitions.
