Five of Ghana’s most celebrated football icons have been honoured at a special ceremony in Accra aimed at recognising their contribution to the nation’s sporting history while they are still alive to witness the appreciation.

Former Black Stars and club greats Rev. Osei Kofi, Ibrahim Sunday, Mohammed Ahmed “Polo”, Nii Odartey Lamptey and Daniel Quaye were recognised at the grand finale of the BRÜHM Honours Legends campaign, held at the Alisa Hotel in North Ridge on Friday.

The initiative, organised by home appliance brand BRÜHM, brought together former footballers, government officials, business leaders and sports administrators to celebrate players whose achievements helped shape Ghanaian football across different generations.

The five honourees have played key roles in some of Ghana’s most memorable football milestones, including Africa Cup of Nations successes, continental club triumphs, FIFA youth tournaments and the country’s maiden FIFA World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006.

Each received a commemorative citation, a BRÜHM television and a refrigerator in recognition of their contribution to Ghanaian football.

The event marked the end of a nationwide campaign that used documentary storytelling, digital content and public engagement to preserve the stories of some of Ghana’s football pioneers and reconnect younger audiences with the personalities behind the country’s greatest sporting moments.

Speaking at the ceremony, BRÜHM Global’s Head of Marketing, Roshanak Taheri, said the campaign sought to recognise the individuals whose sacrifices laid the foundation for Ghana’s football success.

“Our campaign was never really about an ending. It was about remembering where something began,” she said.

“We wanted to celebrate the men whose achievements created memories that generations of Ghanaians still cherish today.”

She added that some of Ghana’s most unforgettable football moments were experienced not only inside stadiums but also in homes and neighbourhood viewing centres, where families gathered around television sets to celebrate victories and share lasting memories.

Awurakua Antwi, Marketing Manager for BRÜHM Ghana and Somotex Ghana Limited, said the initiative reflected the company’s long relationship with Ghanaian families.

“For decades, BRÜHM has been part of Ghanaian homes. This campaign is our way of celebrating the heroes behind those memories and ensuring their stories continue to inspire future generations,” she said.

The Deputy Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Veronica Commey, praised the initiative, describing it as an example of the importance of recognising national heroes during their lifetime.

“As someone who believes strongly in giving people their flowers while they can still smell them, I commend BRÜHM for making this possible,” she said, urging more organisations to support similar initiatives that preserve Ghana’s sporting heritage.

Also addressing guests, the General Manager and Business Head of Somotex Ghana Limited, Shivesh Srivastava, said businesses should contribute to society beyond their commercial activities.

He said BRÜHM’s four decades of serving Ghanaian households had strengthened its commitment to celebrating people whose achievements have brought pride to the nation.

The evening featured documentary screenings highlighting the careers of the football legends, cultural performances, musical entertainment and tributes from invited guests, many of whom described the occasion as a fitting recognition of players whose contributions have inspired generations of Ghanaians.

Beyond honouring individual achievements, organisers said the campaign was intended to preserve Ghana’s football history and encourage younger generations to appreciate the pioneers whose successes helped define the country’s sporting identity.
