The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially conceded defeat in the Akwatia by-election, acknowledging the results as a reflection of the will of the constituents.

Certified results from the Electoral Commission show that Bediako won the seat with 18,199 votes, while the NPP’s candidate, Kwame Asumadu, came second with 15,235 votes. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) placed a distant third, receiving just 82 votes. In total, 33,819 valid votes were cast, with 303 ballots rejected.

Speaking after the announcement, Eastern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Tony Osei-Adjei, expressed disappointment but affirmed the party’s respect for the democratic process.

“We are a bit disappointed because that wasn’t what we expected but the constituents have spoken so we take it in good faith,” he stated.

Mr. Osei-Adjei also paid tribute to the late Ernest Kumi, the former MP for the area, whose passing triggered the by-election. He lamented the party’s inability to retain the seat in Kumi’s honour.

“To some extent, we disappointed him because he has lost his life in trying to maintain the seat. He won, he had ran every bit of his life chasing to restore his honour and dignity to his constituents,” he said.

He further referenced the legal battles Kumi faced prior to his death, noting, “Somewhere along the line he lost when the Supreme Court gave the first ruling and it was left with the Koforidua court to take a decision on it.”
