Asamoah Gyan questions Black Stars urgency after 2026 World Cup exit

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has criticised the Black Stars’ lack of urgency after their 2026 World Cup campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat by Colombia.

Jhon Arias scored in the 14th minute as Colombia secured a place in the last 16, where they will face Switzerland. Ghana’s exit came at the round-of-32 stage.

The Black Stars struggled to respond after falling behind early in Kansas City and were unable to find the breakthrough needed to keep their tournament alive.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, said he was frustrated by the team’s approach while chasing the game.

“The way Ghana played today, I don’t like when you are losing and do not show any urgency,” he said.

“It’s frustrating. Show the world you want to win.”

Ghana had gone into the match hoping to build on their performance against England, but Gyan suggested the team had moved away from a tactical approach that had previously brought success.

“In my view, we should have kept playing the way we played against England,” he added.

“It worked for us. If we keep changing tactics during the tournament, there is a problem.”

Colombia took control after Arias’ early goal and managed the contest effectively, limiting Ghana’s opportunities to build sustained pressure.

The Black Stars remained within reach of the match at half-time but could not convert possession into clear chances after the break.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz was unable to find a route back into the game as Colombia defended their advantage and saw out the result.

The defeat brings Ghana’s World Cup journey to an end, while Colombia move on with hopes of extending their run in the tournament.
