Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has called for patience with head coach Carlos Queiroz following the Black Stars’ elimination from the 2026 World Cup.

Ghana were beaten 1-0 by Colombia in their Round of 32 match in Kansas City on Saturday, with Jhon Arias scoring the decisive goal in the 14th minute.

The defeat ended the Black Stars’ campaign and prompted fresh criticism of the team’s performances, particularly concerns over the lack of fluency in their play.

But Ayew said it was too early to judge Queiroz, who took charge in April and had only a short period to introduce his tactical approach before the tournament.

“The new manager just came and people are adjusting to his style,” Ayew said after the match.

“The team can’t adjust between one or two months. Football doesn’t work like that.”

Queiroz, the experienced Portuguese coach, has sought to introduce a more disciplined defensive structure and a clearer tactical system to the Ghana side.

Ayew said such changes required time, particularly at international level, where managers have limited opportunities to work with their players between matches.

Ghana struggled to respond after Arias’ early strike, despite enjoying periods of possession and pushing for an equaliser in the second half.

The Black Stars captain acknowledged the disappointment of the exit but insisted the team needed stability and continued work rather than another quick change in direction.

Ghana’s focus will now turn to rebuilding ahead of their next international fixtures.
