President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to assume additional responsibility as Minister for Defence, following the death of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash.

Similarly, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, has been asked to act as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, replacing the late Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The temporary appointments were announced in a press release issued on Thursday, August 7, by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson to the President.

These changes follow the devastating helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including two ministers of state, as they were en route to Obuasi on official government duty.

The deceased have been identified as:

  • Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Alhaji Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Mr Samuel Aboagye, Former Parliamentary Candidate
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafimi Anala
  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo

The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter, carrying the delegation, reportedly went off radar before crashing into a forested area and catching fire, leaving no survivors.

At a press briefing on Wednesday evening, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the fatalities and announced that all national flags will be flown at half-mast until further notice in honour of the victims.

The government is expected to provide more updates as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
