Bawumia is Competent, but Ken Agyapong has higher winning potential- Stephen Amoah
Nhyiaeso MP and former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah, believes that Kennedy Agyapong offers the New Patriotic Party (NPP) its strongest chance of winning the 2028 general elections, despite acknowledging the competence and contributions of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Tuesday, August 26, Dr. Amoah praised the economic leadership of the Akufo-Addo administration, crediting Dr. Bawumia for his role in Ghana’s recent economic gains as head of the Economic Management Team.
However, he argued that electoral success in Ghana is shaped by more than government performance, citing factors such as regional voting patterns, public sentiment, and political dynamics.
“I don’t think I have questioned the competence of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia before. Never. My issue is about the high probability of NPP winning or losing the election in 2028. It is not about competence. In winning an election in Ghana, it doesn’t depend only on performance,” he said.
He added, “There are a number of factors that will actually impact; they correlate with different degrees, and most of them do not necessarily mean you have performed well or not. We have geographical voting. I have analysed these things and I think our chance of winning with Kennedy Agyapong will be higher.”
Dr. Amoah’s comments highlight growing internal debate within the NPP as the party looks ahead to selecting a presidential candidate capable of securing a third consecutive term in office.
