Bawumia Mourns Grace Nortey, Hails Her as Creative Arts Trailblazer
NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid tribute to veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey, describing her as a trailblazer whose remarkable career helped shape Ghana’s creative arts industry.
Dr Bawumia said the late actress dedicated more than five decades to entertaining audiences while serving as an inspiration to generations of young women seeking careers in theatre, television and film.
In a tribute shared on Facebook, Dr Bawumia and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, expressed their condolences to the actress’s family, friends, colleagues and the wider creative arts community.
“Hajia Samira and I extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, loved ones, and the entire creative arts fraternity. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” he wrote.
Grace Nortey died at the age of 89 in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
Born on February 1, 1937, Nortey built an illustrious career across Ghana’s theatre, television and film sectors, becoming one of the country’s most recognisable veteran performers.
She was celebrated for her commanding screen presence and her portrayal of outspoken, strong-willed and determined female characters.
Her extensive body of work included productions such as Obra, Osofo Dadzie, Nana Akoto, Escape to Love, Ties That Bind and Sinking Sands, where she played the role of Grandma.
She also featured in the internationally acclaimed 2015 film Beasts of No Nation, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba and Abraham Attah. Nortey portrayed the Old Witch Woman in the Ghana-shot movie.
With a career spanning over half a century, Grace Nortey leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Ghana’s most celebrated figures in the performing arts.
