Black Starlets vs Uganda will be a cracking game – Black Starlets Media Officer Sheikh Tophic

Ghana’s Black Starlets are preparing for a high-stakes playoff clash against Uganda in a match already being described as one of the most emotional fixtures of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite missing out on a place in the knockout stage, Ghana kept their FIFA U-17 World Cup hopes alive with an impressive 3-1 victory over South Africa in their final Group D game, securing a playoff opportunity for a place at the global tournament.
The encounter against Uganda has attracted extra attention because of the presence of Uganda head coach Laryea Kingston, a former Ghana international who previously worked with some members of the current Black Starlets squad.
Speaking ahead of the decisive tie, Black Starlets Media Officer Sheikh Tophic admitted the fixture carries deep emotions and could become one of the tournament’s most memorable matches.
“To be very sincere with you, this is a fixture that I wish had never happened,” Tophic said. “It’s going to be a cracking game, one that will leave a lot of memories.”
Several players in Ghana’s current squad were once coached by Kingston during his time with Ghana’s youth setup, adding another layer of intrigue to the contest.
According to Tophic, the players are eager to prove how much they have developed under current head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum while also showcasing lessons learned from their previous experience with Kingston.
“We have a couple of players who worked under Laryea Kingston and are still with the team,” he explained. “They have to prove a point and show what they learned then, combined with what they are being taught now under Coach Ogum.”
He expressed confidence that the young Ghanaian side would rise to the occasion when it matters most.
“I believe when the moment comes, they will stand tall for Ghana,” he added.
The playoff match is scheduled for 19:00 GMT, with the winner securing qualification to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
