CAF Champions League: Our aim is to win the cup – Medeama board chairman Dr Toni Aubynn
Medeama SC have set their sights on winning the CAF Champions League after securing the Ghana Premier League title and earning a place in Africa’s top club competition.
The Yellow and Mauve will begin their campaign against Congolese giants TP Mazembe in the preliminary round, with the two-legged tie expected to be played later this month.
Medeama board chairman Dr Toni Aubynn says the club are not travelling to Africa simply to make up the numbers.
“In the past, we wanted to progress to the money zone, but now our aim is to win the cup itself by making Ghana proud and the people of the Western Region proud. Our target is to go for the kill,” he told Graphic Sports.
Medeama have already begun preparations for the new season and are currently in Ivory Coast as they build towards their Champions League campaign.
Their first obstacle will be one of the continent’s most experienced clubs. TP Mazembe have a long history in African competition and are expected to provide a stern test for the Ghanaian champions.
Dr Aubynn acknowledged the difficulty of the assignment but said Medeama would not be intimidated by their opponents’ pedigree.
He accepts that Medeama may enter the tie as underdogs, but believes the club’s previous experience in continental competition can help them compete with the Congolese side.
“We know it will be difficult because TP Mazembe are a formidable opponent, but we are prepared for the challenge,” he said.
For Medeama, the immediate priority will be to negotiate the preliminary round. But the club’s ambitions stretch much further.
Having previously targeted a place in the lucrative stages of the competition, the Ghanaian champions now want to go all the way, a bold objective that would represent a landmark achievement for the club and Ghanaian football.
The first test, however, is Mazembe. And Medeama believe they have nothing to lose.
