The trial of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is set to begin today, Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

This follows his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, in compliance with a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine.

Chairman Wontumi faces charges related to illegal mining operations and mining without a license, allegedly linked to Akonta Mining Limited, a company reportedly associated with him.

He was granted bail to the tune of GH¢1 million ahead of today’s court proceedings.

Speaking to the media, his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed the charge, stating that while the allegations will be addressed in court, his client maintains his innocence.

“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” he added.

The case is part of a broader national crackdown on illegal mining, or galamsey, which continues to raise concerns over environmental degradation and weak enforcement of mining laws.
