Majority Chief Whip Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpor has assured the public that Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Kwame Ohene Frimpong, currently held at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, is in good health and being treated well by authorities.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Wednesday, the Chief Whip said information available to Parliament confirms that the legislator is safe and has not been subjected to any mistreatment during his time in custody.

“He is well, he is not being maltreated. He is fine, he is just in detention, nothing untoward has happened to him,” Dafeamekpor said.

The Chief Whip further revealed that preliminary information suggests Mr Frimpong was detained on the basis of a warrant originating from the United States, though the specific details and contents of the warrant have not yet been made available to Parliament.

He added that Ghanaian authorities and relevant parties are being engaged as efforts to understand the full circumstances of the detention continue.

Parliament had formally acknowledged the situation in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, confirming that the matter had been brought before the House and that the Speaker and parliamentary leadership were actively working to obtain a comprehensive account of the incident through Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague.
