Egypt held their nerve to beat Australia 4-2 on penalties and reach the World Cup last 16 after a tense 1-1 draw.
Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early advantage when he scored in the 13th minute, putting the African side in control of the match.
Australia responded and drew level after Mohamed Hany turned the ball into his own net, setting up a tightly contested finish.
Neither side could find a winner in the remaining 90 minutes or during extra time, as the match became increasingly cautious with a place in the next round at stake.
Egypt were more composed in the penalty shootout, converting four times as Australia missed twice.
The result sends Egypt into the last 16, where they will face the winner of Argentina’s match against Cape Verde.
