Govt to mainstream agroecology under Feed Ghana Programme – Vice President

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to integrating agroecological and nature-based farming practices into its flagship Feed Ghana Programme as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and enhance national food security.
Her remarks were delivered on her behalf by the Chief of Staff, Alex Segbefia, during the CIRAWA International Conference on Agroecology and Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Food Systems in Africa, held in Accra on Thursday, July 3, 2026.
According to the Vice President, the four-year Feed Ghana Programme is designed to promote sustainable agricultural practices, including crop diversification, agroforestry, improved soil fertility management, the use of bio-fertilisers and bio-pesticides, farmer-led irrigation, simple mechanisation and improved seed systems.
“The Government of Ghana has committed, through its flagship Feed Ghana Programme, to promoting and mainstreaming agroecological practices as part of the country’s wider agricultural transformation agenda,” she stated.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang noted that despite decades of investment by governments and development partners, Africa continues to grapple with food production challenges, underscoring the need for more sustainable and resilient farming systems.
She acknowledged that while conventional agricultural practices have played a significant role in reducing global hunger, they have also contributed to environmental degradation and the depletion of natural resources.
“The production and consumption of adequate, nutritious, safe and affordable food for all remain serious and persistent challenges across Africa and beyond. We must not only halt this destruction, but degraded ecosystems must also be rehabilitated and restored,” she said.
The Vice President called on governments, civil society organisations, researchers and development partners to strengthen collaboration in developing practical solutions that will advance sustainable agriculture and transform food systems across the continent.
