FC Koln in talks to sign Ghana defender Gideon Mensah

German Bundesliga side FC Koln are in advanced talks to sign Ghana left-back Gideon Mensah following the expiry of his contract at French club Auxerre.
The 27-year-old became a free agent on 30 June after leaving Auxerre, where he made 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season and helped the club avoid relegation.
Mensah is currently with Ghana at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and has not yet publicly confirmed where he will play next season.
However, FC Koln are understood to be in discussions with the defender’s representatives, with talks progressing as the club look to strengthen their options at left-back.
Mensah is being considered as a replacement for Kristoffer Lund, who is due to return to his parent club Palermo after his loan spell in Cologne.
The former West Africa Football Academy player has been one of Ghana’s most consistent performers at the tournament, playing every minute of the Black Stars’ matches so far.
He also took on a leadership role in Ghana’s opening game against Panama, wearing the captain’s armband after Jordan Ayew was substituted.
Ghana will face Colombia in Kansas City on Friday in the last 32 of the World Cup, with Mensah expected to remain focused on the tournament before deciding on his club future.
A move to FC Koln would offer the defender a new challenge in Germany after his spell in France.
