FIFA is facing mounting pressure after authorities in the United States launched an official investigation into allegations surrounding ticket sales for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The probe follows complaints from fans who claim they were misled during the ticket purchasing process, while others accused FIFA of creating artificial scarcity and inflating prices for matches at next month’s global football showpiece.

The investigation is being led jointly by the offices of the Attorneys General of New York and New Jersey together with the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

FIFA Subpoenaed Over Ticket Sales Practices

New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport described the ticket process as a “gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity and impossibly high prices.”

She confirmed that FIFA has officially been subpoenaed and ordered to provide internal documents and information relating to its World Cup ticketing system.

According to Davenport, authorities intend to conduct a “thorough investigation” into FIFA’s conduct amid growing public frustration over the cost and availability of tickets.

A subpoena legally compels an organisation to release requested records or information as part of an investigation.

Fans Allege Deceptive Pricing Tactics

Authorities are examining allegations that FIFA used variable pricing mechanisms to significantly increase ticket prices across different sales phases.

Investigators claim ticket prices for approximately 90 of the tournament’s 104 matches increased by an average of 34 percent compared to earlier sales windows.

Officials are also scrutinising accusations that FIFA introduced more expensive “front” category seating options after initial ticket releases, allegedly misleading supporters about available seat locations and pricing structures.

Samuel AA Levine, commissioner of the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, said the agency would treat allegations of deceptive practices seriously.

“We take allegations of blatantly deceptive conduct very seriously,” Levine stated while referencing claims that prices may have been artificially inflated.

Concerns Grow Ahead Of Historic Tournament

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the largest World Cup in history with an expanded format involving 48 nations and 104 matches.

However, concerns over affordability and accessibility have continued to grow among football fans worldwide.

Several supporters have complained that ticket prices for the tournament have surpassed costs seen at previous World Cups, raising fears that ordinary fans may struggle to attend matches.

The investigation will also examine whether FIFA’s public statements and ticket release schedules contributed to inflated market demand and confusion among supporters.

FIFA Yet To Respond Publicly

Despite the growing controversy, FIFA has so far declined to publicly comment on the allegations or the ongoing investigation.

The situation adds fresh scrutiny to preparations for the tournament, which is expected to attract millions of supporters from across the globe next summer.
