Four illegal miners killed as pit collapses at Skuumu in Amansie Central

Four illegal miners have lost their lives after a mining pit caved in at Skuumu, near Gyaman-Nkwanta in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region, in yet another tragic reminder of the deadly risks associated with galamsey operations.
The collapse occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, sending shockwaves through the local community and reigniting concerns about the persistence of illegal mining activities in the area.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies were swiftly deployed to the scene to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
All four bodies were subsequently retrieved from the collapsed pit and have since been deposited at the Jacobu Government Hospital morgue.
The leader of the group has been identified as Solomon Amadevor. The identities of the three remaining victims are yet to be officially confirmed as investigations continue.
The incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatalities linked to illegal mining operations across Ghana’s mining communities, where poorly constructed and unsupported pits frequently give way without warning, trapping those working underground. Authorities are expected to investigate the full circumstances surrounding the collapse.
