Black Meteors coach Ibrahim Tanko has expressed optimism about his side’s chances of qualification to next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan despite losing to Ivory Coast in the semi final of the CAF u23 Nations Cup on Tuesday.

Ghana’s quest to end a 15-year wait for an Olympic appearance was dealt a huge blow when the Black Meteors lost on penalties to neighbours Ivory Coast at the Cairo international stadium in Egypt.

The defeat left Ghana with one last chance as there is only one more slot left for Africa.

Ghana will now face South Africa in the third place playoff on Friday in what will be their final attempt to grab a ticket to represent Africa at the global event in Tokyo.

And head coach of the team believes his side still have a chance.

“I want to congratulate Cote d’Ivoire who qualified to the final and got their qualification to the Olympics. Tonight we missed on penalties, but both teams have given a beautiful image of African football and we still have a chance of Olympic qualification with the ranking match,” Tanko said after the semi final defeat to Ivory Coast.

The third place match will kick off at 16:30hrs local time (14:30hrs) at the Cairo International Stadium.
