President of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama has called for greater transparency and consistency in the disclosure of funds used for sporting activities in Ghana.
He made the remarks at a fundraising event held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in support of the Ghana national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Mahama’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about financial accountability in Ghanaian football, following concerns raised by Kurt Okraku, president of the Ghana Football Association, over what he described as excessive scrutiny of the team’s budget.
Addressing guests at the event, Mahama stressed the importance of openness in managing public funds.
“Ghanaians have the right to know how their resources are being utilised, and corporate partners deserve transparency before they will agree to invest,” he said.
He further urged authorities to sustain and improve financial reporting standards within the sector.
“I commend the Minister for Sports and Recreation to maintain this standard, but we need to be more consistent in releasing information about how much we spend as a country on our sporting activities,” he added.
The event was attended by key government officials, including Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem and Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L of the World Cup alongside England national football team, Panama national football team and Croatia national football team.
As part of preparations, the Black Stars are set to face the Austria national football team and Germany national football team in upcoming international friendlies, ahead of the tournament which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Mahama’s call adds to the growing conversation around accountability in Ghanaian sports, as stakeholders seek to build trust and ensure sustainable investment in the sector.
