The government has unveiled plans to acquire 500 new buses to boost the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) and improve public transportation nationwide.

Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, announced the initiative in Parliament on Thursday, October 30, 2025, describing it as part of the government’s broader strategy to modernise public transport and support Ghana’s economic transformation agenda.

According to the minister, 150 of the new buses are expected to arrive in the first quarter of next year, marking the first phase of the rollout.

Mr. Nikpe explained that MMTL’s current fleet of 134 operational buses has severely limited its ability to sustain operations, expand routes, and meet rising demand for affordable transport.

“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses, about 500 of them over a short to long term to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe stated.

“These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas.”

He added that MMTL is also taking steps to implement aspects of the 24-hour economy, beginning with its vehicle maintenance and traffic units, to keep buses operational and available at all times.
