Govt outlines plans for national multimodal transport network

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nipke has revealed that the government is working to integrate Ghana’s four main modes of transport: air, road, rail, and inland water to create a more seamless and efficient travel experience for citizens.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 2, 2025, Mr. Nipke said the vision is to build a fully interconnected national transport system that enables travellers to easily transition between different modes depending on their destination and needs.
“Our vision is how we can integrate the four modes of transport to make travel easier or seamless for people. When you take the aviation sector, although people say it is expensive, it is the fastest, depending on where you want to go and what you want to do,” he said.
The Minister added that while the aviation sector continues to play a critical role, the government is also prioritising improvements in rail and inland water transport to better complement the existing road network.
“We are looking at how to improve on the rest of the modes of transport—railway, and also the inland water transport services. That will integrate the transport system, so you can use one to a point and continue with the other options,” the minister explained.
According to Mr. Nipke, the goal is to reduce travel times, ease congestion, and improve accessibility across the country by leveraging the unique strengths of each mode of transport.
