KMA taskforce clears unauthorised structures around Baba Yara Sports Stadium

A joint security task force led by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has demolished unauthorised structures around Baba Yara Sports Stadium in an operation aimed at restoring order and improving sanitation at the national sports facility.

The exercise took place on Friday and focused on illegal containers, pubs, food joints, kiosks and other makeshift structures erected around the stadium without approval.

The KMA said the occupants had received several eviction notices from January 2026, giving them time to leave the area voluntarily. However, many remained in place despite the warnings, leading the Assembly to enforce the directive through the demolition exercise.

The operation is part of a wider plan to decongest the stadium’s surroundings, improve environmental sanitation and protect the integrity of the facility.

KMA Public Relations Officer Henrietta Afia Aboagye said the Assembly had followed the required procedures before the exercise was carried out.

“Our first eviction notice was issued on January 19. The second followed in April, while the final notice was served in June. In all, the occupants had about six months to relocate, but they failed to comply. The Assembly therefore had no option but to enforce the directive,” she stated.

According to the Assembly, all the unauthorised structures identified for removal were successfully demolished. The clearance has created additional space around Baba Yara Sports Stadium and improved sanitation within the surrounding area.

The exercise removed illegal containers, drinking spots, food vendors and other makeshift facilities that had occupied the stadium’s surroundings for several years.

The KMA said the action was necessary to address congestion and restore a more orderly environment around the sports facility. The stadium is a major venue for sporting activities in Kumasi, and the Assembly’s operation was intended to preserve the condition and appearance of its wider surroundings.

One female occupant reportedly collapsed during the demolition exercise. Security personnel and people nearby responded to the incident by sprinkling water on her face, after which she regained consciousness.

No serious injuries were reported during the operation.
