Kwasi Sibo closes in on a transfer to Turkish club Genclerbirligi
Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo is reportedly close to joining Turkish club Genclerbirligi after emerging as the preferred destination for the 28-year-old free agent.
Sibo is understood to have reached a preliminary agreement with the Turkish side, according to Footy-Africa, with Genclerbirligi now working to complete the remaining formalities.
The midfielder became a free agent after leaving Spanish club Real Oviedo, where he spent the past two seasons.
His availability attracted interest from several clubs, including Premier League side West Ham United, Championship outfit Hull City and French club Lorient. Greek champions PAOK were also reported to be monitoring his situation.
There was further interest from Saudi Arabia, with Sibo’s family understood to have encouraged him to consider a move to the Gulf because of the financial security it could offer.
But Genclerbirligi have moved ahead of their rivals, with Sibo reportedly favouring a switch to Turkey and the Turkish Super Lig.
Sibo played an important role in Real Oviedo’s promotion to LaLiga before featuring in the Spanish top flight during the 2025-26 season.
Oviedo’s return to the top division proved difficult, and the club were eventually relegated. Sibo’s performances, however, continued to attract attention.
His progress was also rewarded at international level when he was included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Sibo featured in Ghana’s matches against England, Colombia, Croatia and Panama, giving him valuable experience on the biggest international stage.
His style of play has made him an appealing option for clubs looking for a physically strong and disciplined midfielder. He is particularly valued for his ball-winning ability and his willingness to protect the defence.
A move to Genclerbirligi would give Sibo the opportunity to start a fresh chapter after two seasons in Spain.
For the Turkish club, his experience in LaLiga and with Ghana could prove valuable as they look to strengthen their midfield.
The transfer is yet to be officially confirmed, but if the remaining formalities are completed, Sibo is expected to continue his career in Turkey.
