In a decisive move to reduce government spending, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate cancellation of all fuel allowances and fuel allocations to political appointees.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency and signed by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the directive is part of broader austerity measures aimed at curbing excessive government expenditure and redirecting public funds toward critical priority areas.

“The President believes that leadership must also bear its part of the sacrifices it is calling on the people to make,” the statement read.

The fuel allowance cancellation adds to a string of cost-cutting measures already underway, including a reduction in the number of ministers and Presidential Office staff. The government has also halted satellite TV subscriptions for offices at the Presidency and other government institutions.

The announcement signals President Mahama’s commitment to lean governance and financial discipline as the country grapples with fiscal challenges.
