Mahama won’t ask me to jump into the sea; trust, shared goals strengthen our working relationship – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says mutual trust, shared objectives and a common commitment to national development have strengthened her working relationship with President John Dramani Mahama.
She said both leaders were united by the government’s manifesto and the development agenda presented to Ghanaians during the 2024 election campaign, leaving little room for fundamental disagreements between them.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the administration’s priority was to build the nation and address Ghanaians’ needs rather than create unnecessary tensions within the leadership.
“What are we doing together? That’s a fundamental question. We are here because we have a manifesto. We did the campaign. The people of Ghana listened to us. They were very merciful to us,” she said.
“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about? To begin with, the issue is we are building the nation,” she added.
The Vice President acknowledged the unique pressures associated with the presidency, saying her role was to support President Mahama as he led the country.
“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said her confidence in the President was also based on her knowledge of him and her trust that his decisions would remain within the objectives agreed upon by the government.
“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.
“So my job is to support him. He’s not going to ask you to go and jump into the sea or anything like that,” she said.
“So far, so good. And I’m very, very thankful. I’m very, very thankful that we have such a good working relationship,” she added.
