Mariano Barreto finally part ways with Kotoko

Kumasi Asante and Coach Mariano Barreto have mutually terminated the contract between them, according to an Nyira FM report.

It comes after months of confusion between the two parties, in which the coach went further to accuse some players of the team of lack of commitment.

The report from the Kumasi-based  FM indicates, Coach Mariano Barreto has signed the termination with the club after a fruitful negotiations with the management led by Nana Yaw Amponsah on Friday.

The new development paves way for Kotoko to proceed with the appointment of a new coach amid reports they have already reached an agreement with Coach Prosper Ogum.

The Ghanaian giants have been holding talks with the 64-year-old trainer for a possible contract abrogation after the end of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.

Relationship between Kotoko and the Portuguese got fractured  after the he and his charged failed to win any trophy last season and went on radio radio accuse some fans and players causing the team’s exit in the FA Cup.

Barreto signed a one and half year contract with the record League holders, but his exit comes just after six months at helm.

Earlier reports indicate he had declared his preparedness to come and continue with his task.

He was appointed in March 2021 replacing Maxwell Konadu who was sacked in December 2020 after just five matches into the season.

Barreto returned to Ghana football almost 15 years after abandoning the national team midway into the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Portuguese topflight outfit Maritimo.

He guided Asante Kotoko to finish second place on the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League log with 57 points and got eliminated at Quarter-Finals of the MTN FA Cup.
