The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a blistering response to claims by former party member and now Presidential Staffer, Rosemond Obeng, that she defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) out of patriotism, with the party’s National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha, exposing that her departure was the result of repeated acts of indiscipline, misconduct and an unhealthy obsession with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mustapha’s response comes days after Rosemond Obeng, who joined the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections and now serves as a presidential staffer in the Office of the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, insisted that her decision to abandon the NPP was motivated solely by her desire to “rescue the soul of the country” and not by the prospect of securing a government appointment.

Speaking at an event, Rosemond rejected suggestions that she negotiated for any political reward before crossing over to the NDC.

“What I did was to rescue the soul of the country,” she stated, adding that she never imagined she would eventually receive an appointment in an NDC administration.

“I never imagined there would be a time I would be rewarded with an opportunity to serve or be part of an NDC administration. It never came to mind. I didn’t cut any deal with anybody. I just spoke my truth,” she said.

She also maintained that she had resigned from working with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia several months before publicly announcing her defection and insisted that her decision was driven entirely by personal conviction.

However, Salam Mustapha has dismissed that narrative, offering what he described as the real reasons behind Rosemond Obeng’s exit from the NPP.

In a lengthy Facebook post published on June 26, 2026, the National Youth Organiser recounted a series of incidents which, according to him, convinced the party’s leadership that Rosemond could no longer continue working within Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team.

According to Mustapha, Rosemond was brought into the youth campaign at the personal request of Dr. Bawumia after expressing a strong desire to contribute to the 2024 election campaign.

He claimed that problems began shortly after she joined the campaign trail.

“After two regions, I got reports about Rosemond. After the fourth region, the complaints had gotten so much worse that even some youth organisers were giving me feedback,” he wrote.

Mustapha said the complaints became so persistent that he advised Dr. Bawumia to recall her from the regional campaign tour.

Following that decision, he said she was reassigned to duties at the campaign headquarters in Accra.

Rejecting public claims that Rosemond served as one of Dr. Bawumia’s official presidential aides at the Jubilee House, Mustapha stated categorically that she never occupied such a position.

“She never worked as a presidential aide. She never worked at the Jubilee House,” he asserted.

According to him, the alleged misconduct continued even after her reassignment to the campaign office.

He accused Rosemond of falsely claiming that Dr. Bawumia had authorised her to travel with his delegation to the United Kingdom, alleging that she presented her passport to a protocol officer even though no such approval had been granted.

Mustapha also alleged that she repeatedly sought access to high-level meetings she had not been invited to attend.

He recounted one incident involving Akuapem North Member of Parliament, Sammi Awuku.

“There was another incident. She wanted to sit in meetings she was not supposed to attend. At one point, my boss, Sammi Awuku, questioned her, ‘Do you have to sit in this meeting?’ She said yes.”

According to Mustapha, subsequent checks established that Rosemond had not been invited to the meeting and had falsely claimed that Awuku himself had authorised her attendance.

He further alleged that Rosemond once attempted to handle food intended for Dr. Bawumia, contrary to established security and protocol procedures.

“You cannot use the man’s name in such a vile manner without his authorisation,” he remarked.

Hotel Drama

Perhaps the most striking allegation made by the National Youth Organiser concerned an incident during a campaign trip to Sunyani.

According to him, Rosemond reportedly became emotional and cried after discovering that she had been accommodated in a different hotel from Dr. Bawumia.

“You get the opportunity to travel with him and you go and put up a show, crying because you were given a hotel separate from where the man was. What kind of obsession is that?” he asked.

Mustapha disclosed that after discussions with Dr. Bawumia, Rosemond was eventually reassigned to the campaign’s Volunteer Groups Unit.

However, he claimed she openly rejected the reassignment because she wanted to remain close to the former Vice President.

“Rosemond said no, she doesn’t like it. She won’t do that one. She wants to be where DMB is. When the man gives us instructions we don’t pick and choose. But you had the guts to choose what you want in the office and refuse to be reassigned?” he stated.

Botched Scholarship

Mustapha further revealed that despite the challenges, he personally appealed to Dr. Bawumia to secure a scholarship opportunity abroad for Rosemond as a way of helping her redirect her focus.

According to him, before that plan could materialise, she left the NPP and later joined the NDC.

“DMB did no wrong to you. You messed up. I hope young people will not behave the way you did. You should show respect when you come into any set-up. You work with the people. You don’t come and say that you are more special than them,” he added.

Rosemond’s appointment as a Senior Presidential Staffer under the NDC administration has since generated mixed reactions, including criticism from some grassroots supporters of the governing party who questioned the decision to appoint a recent defector ahead of long-serving party loyalists.

The controversy has also spilled onto social media, where some NPP supporters have strongly criticised Rosemond, accusing her of betraying Dr. Bawumia and dismissing her claim that her defection was motivated by patriotism.

Despite the criticism, Rosemond has maintained that she acted in the national interest and remains committed to the NDC, insisting she intends to remain with the party permanently.
