MTN Ghana to charge 0.75% fee on momo-to-bank transfers from June 1

MTN Ghana has informed customers of a new charge on transfers from Mobile Money wallets to bank accounts, with the fee set to kick in on June 1, 2026.

The telecommunications company communicated the change via text message, notifying users that wallet-to-bank transfers will attract a fee of 0.75 percent per transaction, with the amount capped at GH¢5 regardless of the sum being transferred.

MTN Ghana described the charge as a measure to support continued improvements in service delivery, stating simply that it would “help us continue to serve you better.”

The announcement is expected to draw significant reaction from mobile money users, particularly small business owners, traders, and individuals who depend on MoMo-to-bank transfers for everyday financial activities such as salary payments, supplier settlements, and personal transactions.

The development comes on the heels of the Bank of Ghana’s directive to suspend the same proposed fee, issued on Tuesday, May 26, citing the need for broader stakeholder engagement before any such charge is introduced.

The central bank emphasised that changes to fees within the mobile financial services ecosystem must be fair, protect consumers, and support their financial wellbeing.

It remains to be seen how MTN Ghana will respond to the regulatory directive and whether the June 1 implementation date will be maintained or postponed in light of the Bank of Ghana’s intervention.
