NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo wins Akwatia by-election

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the Akwatia by-election, securing a key win for the government in one of the most hotly contested political races of the year.
Certified results released by the Electoral Commission indicate that Bediako polled 18,199 votes out of 33,819 valid ballots cast, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes.
The Liberal Party of Ghana’s (LPG) Owusu Patrick placed a distant third with just 82 votes. A total of 303 ballots were rejected.
The by-election was held following the passing of the constituency’s former MP, Ernest Kumi. In the run-up to the vote, both major parties mounted intense campaigns, deploying top national figures and resources to sway the electorate in the swing constituency.
Voting was conducted peacefully across 119 polling stations on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, with polls closing at 5 p.m. Counting and collation followed under the watch of party agents, electoral officials, security personnel, and observers.
News of Bediako’s victory triggered scenes of celebration among NDC supporters, who thronged the streets of Akwatia in jubilant procession, waving flags, chanting party slogans, and praising what they called a “victory for development.”
Political commentators have described the outcome as a morale boost for the NDC, particularly as Akwatia has historically oscillated between the two major parties. The win, analysts suggest, could serve as an early indicator of public sentiment ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In his post-election remarks, Bediako pledged to serve all constituents and to continue the legacy of his predecessor while advancing the government’s development agenda in the area.
