Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has assured the public that the government has not received any official notice from the United States suggesting Ghana’s inclusion in a proposed travel ban list.

His comments follow a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, 2025, suggesting that his administration would consider restricting entry for citizens from 36 additional countries including Ghana as part of a broader immigration crackdown.

A report by The Washington Post indicated that a memo from the U.S. State Department, allegedly reviewed by the publication, outlines the proposed restrictions.

Addressing Parliament on Wednesday, June 19, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that there is “no cause for alarm” at this stage, as Ghana has not been officially notified of any such move.

“Ghana has not been officially notified that we are going to be placed on any prohibition list or on any ban where our citizens cannot travel to the U.S.,” he said.

The Minister added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has initiated consultations with U.S. officials to seek clarification on the reports.

“I have asked that we be assured that those leaks do not carry merit. So far, I can tell the people of Ghana that there is no cause for alarm,” he stated.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and international mobility of Ghanaian citizens and said the ministry will continue to monitor developments closely.
