NPP unveils guidelines for 2028 presidential primary

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially released its guidelines for the upcoming presidential primary ahead of the 2028 general elections, with nominations set to open on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
The comprehensive rules were approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council on Friday, July 25.
According to a statement signed by NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the primary will take place across all 276 constituencies on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Should a run-off be required, it will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
Prospective presidential candidates are required to obtain nomination forms from the General Secretary’s office at the NPP National Secretariat in Asylum Down, Accra. A non-refundable application fee of GH¢100,000 must be paid at the time of obtaining the forms.
In addition to the application fee, all aspirants will need to pay a filing fee of GH¢500,000, with payments to be made via a banker’s draft in favour of the NPP National Headquarters. Aspirants will also be required to pay a development fee, the amount of which will be determined by the National Council.
The statement also noted that the party’s constitution allows aspirants who are dissatisfied with any decision made during the process to file a written appeal to the National Executive Committee within 48 hours of receiving notice of adverse findings. The decision on such appeals will be final.
Furthermore, the statement warned that any aspirant found in violation of the outlined rules or engaged in actions that harm the party’s reputation will face penalties, including disqualification, as per Article 4(7) of the NPP Constitution.
