Omane Boamah’s vision shaped NDC’s health agenda- Ablakwa reveals

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed that many of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) health sector promises were inspired by the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.
Speaking on CitiNews’ Point of View program on Monday, August 11, 2025, Mr. Ablakwa highlighted Dr. Omane Boamah’s significant role as a strategic thinker for President John Mahama during the NDC’s years in opposition, from 2017 to 2024.
“Many people do not know that a lot of the promises in the National Democratic Congress manifesto when it comes to the health sector are his thoughts,” he said.
He pointed to key initiatives like free primary healthcare and the MahamaCares programme, which were conceptualized by Dr. Omane Boamah and resonated deeply with the public.
“He became a strong strategist for President Mahama throughout the opposition period,”he added.
Dr. Omane Boamah, who tragically passed away in the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, left behind a legacy of innovative policies and political strategy that continue to shape the NDC’s approach to governance.
The helicopter crash claimed the lives of Dr. Omane Boamah, alongside Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation. Other victims of the crash include Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.
The crew members who perished in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the Z-9 helicopter, carrying three crew members and five passengers, had gone off the radar after departing Accra at 09:12 local time (GMT). The aircraft was en route to Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining event. A search-and-rescue operation was launched immediately, but it later confirmed that all eight people aboard had died.
