Randy Abbey- “AFCON failure a rude awakening for Black Stars”

By Stephen Boye October 28, 2025

Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Dr Randy Abbey, has described Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a painful but necessary wake-up call for the national team and technical leadership.

For the first time in over two decades, the four-time African champions will be absent from the continent’s premier tournament — a stunning fall from grace that has triggered widespread introspection.

“It was difficult to take… but I believe it served as a rude awakening for Otto Addo and the Black Stars,” Abbey told Sporty FM.

Ghana failed to win a single match in the qualifiers, finishing bottom of their group — a result that stunned fans and reignited debates about squad depth, tactical direction, and leadership cohesion.

Despite the AFCON heartbreak, the Black Stars have bounced back by securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The turnaround has been seen as a testament to the team’s resilience, and a chance to rebuild trust and momentum on the global stage.

Coming up next for the Black Stars:

  • Asian Tour Friendlies: November 2025
  • World Cup Draw: December 5, 2025
  • AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Begin mid-2026
  • FIFA World Cup 2026: June–July in North America
