2026 World Cup: Black Stars players are determined to impress – Stephen Appiah

Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Stephen Appiah, says Ghana’s players are eager to make a statement at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the country prepares for its fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
The Black Stars will compete at the Mundial in the United States, Canada and Mexico next summer after securing qualification for the expanded tournament.
Drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, Ghana heads into the competition hoping to bounce back from disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups.
Speaking to Asempa FM, Appiah said the current squad is highly motivated and determined to restore pride to Ghana football on the global stage.
“The players cannot wait to get to the Mundial to perform and show what they can offer the team,” the former Black Stars captain said.
“So I am happy as a Ghanaian, and with the support of the country, the players are determined to impress at the World Cup.”
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on 17 June before facing England in Boston on 23 June.
The four-time African champions will then conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on 27 June.
As part of preparations for the tournament, the Black Stars are scheduled to play international friendlies against Mexico on 22 May and Wales on 2 June.
Appiah, who captained Ghana at the country’s maiden World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006, believes the current generation has the quality and determination to compete strongly on the world stage.
