The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has announced plans to demolish all unauthorized structures within the protected Tema Ramsar Site. The demolition is set to begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, and will impact areas including Communities 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12.

This move comes amid growing concerns over illegal encroachment on the wetland, which serves as an important ecological buffer and a vital habitat for diverse wildlife.

During an unannounced inspection of the site earlier this week, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo expressed deep concern over the scale of unauthorised development taking place within the Ramsar reserve.

She described the encroachment as a “serious threat to the ecological integrity” of the protected area and vowed to take swift action to stop further degradation.

“This is a protected area, and we cannot allow private developers or individuals to compromise its long-term environmental value,” she said.

The Minister also issued a firm warning to those involved in the illegal sale of land within the wetland, urging them to cease such activities immediately. She made it clear that the government would not tolerate the commercialisation of protected lands and would take legal action when necessary.

Residents and occupants of structures within the affected zones have been advised to vacate the area and remove their belongings ahead of the demolition to avoid potential loss or damage.

The Tema Ramsar Site is recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. It plays a crucial role in flood control, water purification, and biodiversity conservation.

This demolition effort is part of wider initiatives by REGSEC and the Regional Coordinating Council to restore and safeguard environmentally sensitive areas throughout the region.
