STC to receive 140 new buses within two Months – Transport Minister

The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced that the State Transport Company (STC) will receive 140 new buses within the next two months as part of government efforts to strengthen public transportation and improve mobility across the country.
The move comes amid growing concerns over the availability, reliability and efficiency of public transport services, particularly as demand for intercity travel continues to increase.
Many commuters and long-distance travellers have raised concerns about overcrowding, limited transport options and delays, prompting calls for increased investment in the sector.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with Bernard Avle on Monday, June 8, Mr Nikpe outlined measures being implemented by the government to expand the country’s public transport fleet and enhance service delivery.
The Minister also addressed concerns regarding the deployment of the 100 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses recently commissioned by the government, explaining that broader plans are underway to improve transportation nationwide.
According to him, the government’s transport expansion programme extends beyond the Metro Mass fleet and includes significant support for the State Transport Company to boost intercity transport services.
“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation, but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months, and STC will also have 140 buses, and we will be able to have more high-occupancy buses,” he stated.
The addition of the new buses is expected to increase transport capacity, improve connectivity between major towns and cities, and ease pressure on existing public transportation services.
Government officials believe the investment will help provide safer, more reliable and more efficient transport options for commuters while supporting economic activities across the country.
