2026 World Cup: Knockout Stage Is the Minimum for Ghana – Frederick Acheampong

A member of the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council has said reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is the minimum expectation for the Black Stars as they prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Frederick Acheampong believes Ghana have the quality and experience to progress beyond the group phase for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.
The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, but Acheampong says the team’s objective remains clear.
“Our target is to reach the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. We believe Carlos Queiroz understands that objective,” he told Citi Sports.
The Portuguese coach was appointed in April following the departure of Otto Addo and has been tasked with guiding Ghana back into the latter stages of the competition after disappointing group-stage exits in Brazil in 2014 and Qatar in 2022.
Queiroz has also made his ambitions clear, insisting that qualification from the group is non-negotiable.
Speaking after Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Wales in a recent international friendly, the 73-year-old underlined the importance of delivering results when the tournament begins.
“At the end of 270 minutes, we have to qualify for the second round,” he said, referring to Ghana’s three group-stage matches.
The Black Stars will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field before facing one of the tournament favourites, England, on 23 June at Gillette Stadium.
Their final Group L encounter comes against Croatia on 27 June, with a place in the knockout rounds at stake.
For a nation still inspired by its memorable 2010 campaign, expectations are once again rising. And according to Ghana’s football leadership, simply participating will not be enough, progression beyond the group stage is the benchmark by which this team will be judged.
