Residents of Tse Addo in the Greater Accra Region woke up to a distressing sight after a heavy downpour left Safari Homes and several neighbouring houses submerged in floodwaters, turning streets into rivers and homes into islands of despair.

The flooding, triggered by an intense rainfall, overwhelmed the area and sent water surging into residential properties, leaving occupants scrambling to move valuables to higher ground as floodwaters crept through doors, corridors and living spaces.

Safari Homes, a residential estate in the Tse Addo enclave, was among the worst affected, with images and videos from the scene showing properties partially submerged and compounds blanketed in murky water. Several other houses in the surrounding neighbourhood suffered a similar fate as the volume of rainfall exceeded what the area’s drainage infrastructure could handle.

Residents expressed frustration at the recurring nature of the flooding, with many pointing to choked and inadequate drainage systems as the primary culprit behind what has become an almost seasonal ordeal for communities in the area.

The incident adds to a growing list of flood-related emergencies that have battered parts of Accra in recent days, following similar scenes in Klagon, Ashaiman and other parts of the capital during the same period of heavy rainfall.

Authorities are yet to provide an official assessment of the damage or outline measures to address the persistent drainage challenges that continue to leave communities across Accra vulnerable every time the rains arrive.
