Black Stars assistant coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, has provided more insight into the exclusion of Thomas Partey from Ghana’s final 27-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Despite the Arsenal midfielder’s return to training following an injury in October 2023, he was not included in the final squad, raising questions about his fitness.

Didi Dramani clarified that the decision was influenced by the anticipated late recovery of Partey.

Explaining the situation, Didi Dramani stated, “With Partey’s issue, he is likely to be fully fit late, and that might be towards the end of the tournament, and that won’t help the team.”

He emphasized that the coaching staff values players who can be available for the majority of the tournament rather than a late addition.

Partey, a key player, and Tariq Lamptey were both categorized as important players by Didi Dramani.

However, the decision was based on the need for players to have sufficient playing time before being called up.

Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, will kick off their campaign against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024, followed by matches against Egypt and Mozambique on January 18 and 22, respectively, in Group B.

The Black Stars aim to secure their fifth AFCON title, last winning it in 1982. The tournament is scheduled to run from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
