Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana Football Association to commit to a long-term rebuilding plan for the Black Stars following their World Cup exit.

Ghana were knocked out in the Round of 32 after a 1-0 defeat by Colombia, with Jhon Arias scoring the only goal in the 14th minute.

Kingston, now coach of Uganda’s under-17 national team, said Ghana must move away from short-term decisions if it wants to build a side capable of challenging consistently at major tournaments.

Speaking to Joy Sports, the former Black Stars winger said a national team coach should be given time to establish a clear identity, develop players and create a settled squad.

“We need a long-term project to build a team,” Kingston said. “At least five years for a coach to build a team before a tournament.”

He said the focus should be on creating a competitive team rather than demanding instant success.

Kingston also believes the next Africa Cup of Nations should be treated as part of the rebuilding process, rather than a competition Ghana must win at all costs.

“We shouldn’t be thinking about winning the AFCON because we do not have a team,” he added.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with the qualifiers due to begin in September.

Ghana will be seeking to recover from their World Cup disappointment and lay the foundations for a more stable and competitive future.
