The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested ten individuals and seized nine firearms in a series of targeted security operations in Akwatia, ahead of the upcoming by-election.

The weapons recovered include eight pump-action guns and one locally manufactured single-barrel firearm, according to the police. The arrests and seizures were made during snap checks and intelligence-led operations designed to prevent the illegal possession and use of weapons during the election period.

On August 22, 2025, officers near St. Dominic Hospital intercepted a vehicle driven by Bernard Kumi Ofosu, recovering a Tulpar double-barrel pump-action gun, four AAA live cartridges, and two blank cartridges. Although Ofosu presented a firearm licence, he remains in custody while police verify its authenticity.

Elsewhere at the Akwatia Y-Junction, police arrested Joshua Amenuku after discovering 15 live BB cartridges in his possession. A search of his home led to the retrieval of an ADLER Tulpar pump-action gun and an additional five cartridges.

Later that day, at the Boadua Livingstone checkpoint, officers arrested Enoch Asiedu and Lu Youyan, a Chinese national, after finding four live cartridges in a Toyota Hilux pickup. The ammunition was reportedly linked to their employer, identified only as Mohammed, who is currently being sought by police.

In a separate operation on August 23, Pieterson Joseph was arrested at Boadua Livingstone Junction with an ADLER Tulpar pump-action gun and 46 cartridges hidden in his vehicle. He admitted ownership of the weapon.

That same evening, police intercepted a Toyota Tundra pickup (registration WR 5535-13) at Staff Village, Boadua. A search revealed three pump-action guns, a Pardus, a Hulglu Atroe, and a third unidentified make. Stephen Nkansah, who claimed ownership of two of the weapons and said the third belonged to his chief, was taken into custody.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command says the operations are part of intensified efforts to maintain security and prevent violence in the lead-up to the by-election. Authorities warn that similar exercises will continue before, during, and after the polls to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
