Chelsea are on the verge of completing a blockbuster move for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers after reaching a verbal agreement with the Premier League club over a potential record transfer.

The Blues have agreed to a £117 million (€137 million, $157 million) package for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder, although final details of the deal are still being completed.

Rogers has already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, with an option for an additional year.

The England international is expected to undergo his medical examination on Monday before the transfer is officially confirmed.

The player’s desire to join Chelsea, coupled with the vision of new manager Xabi Alonso and the club’s long-term project, reportedly played a major role in his decision.

Arsenal were also monitoring the situation and showed interest in signing Rogers, but the forward has chosen Chelsea as his preferred destination.

If completed, the transfer will become the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £106 million (€121 million) deal that brought Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023.

The fee would also break the British transfer record of £116 million, which Manchester City recently agreed with Nottingham Forest for England midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Rogers has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most influential attacking players since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £7 million, with a further £8 million available in performance-related add-ons. Middlesbrough also secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

Since arriving at Villa Park, the former West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City academy graduate has produced impressive numbers, contributing 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances across all competitions.

During the 2025/26 season, Rogers played a key role in Villa’s successful campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 55 matches as the club secured Champions League qualification and lifted the Europa League trophy.

His performances have also earned him recognition on the international stage. Rogers received his first England senior call-up in November 2024 and has featured prominently for the national team, including appearances at the ongoing World Cup.

The midfielder provided the assist for Anthony Gordon’s goal in England’s semi-final clash and remains part of the squad preparing for the third-place play-off against France in the United States.

With the final paperwork and medical still pending, Chelsea are closing in on a signing that could reshape the club’s attacking options and underline their ambition under Alonso.
