Kumawood Actor and Director Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi Dies After Kidney Disease Battle

Ghana’s Kumawood film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor and director Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi, who passed away after a prolonged battle with end-stage kidney disease.

The actor’s death was announced by Akoma FM on Saturday, July 18, 2026, bringing to an end weeks of public concern and fundraising efforts aimed at supporting his medical treatment.

Before his passing, Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi had been diagnosed with severe kidney failure and was undergoing regular dialysis while efforts were being made to secure funds for a kidney transplant.

Reports indicated that more than GH¢700,000 was required to cover the cost of the transplant, continued dialysis sessions and post-surgery care.

His worsening condition attracted sympathy from across Ghana’s creative industry, with colleagues, fans and well-wishers rallying support towards his treatment.

Veteran Kumawood actress Mercy Asiedu was among the prominent personalities who offered assistance, visiting the actor and donating GH¢50,000 to support his medical expenses. She also appealed to industry players and the public to contribute towards the fundraising campaign.

Kwadwo Kwakye Obuobi was celebrated as one of the notable figures in Ghana’s Twi-language movie industry, having made significant contributions as both an actor and filmmaker.

Over the years, he earned admiration for his performances and directorial work, leaving a lasting mark on Kumawood and Ghana’s local film landscape.

His death represents another major loss to the entertainment industry, with tributes expected from actors, filmmakers, fans and other stakeholders as they honour his legacy.
